Patroclos is indeed a noble warrior and comrade because he could not stand seeing his side being defeated by the Trojans. Patroclos urged Achilles again and again to lend him his armor. At that time, Patroclos thought that if he wears the armor of Achilles while going into battle, they would gain an Advantage. An upperhand resulting from the Trojan's fear of Achilles. This all happened while the Greeks were being driven back by the Trojans. He begged Achilles to either return to battle or at least to agree to exhange armors. Soon after, he charges into battle along with Achilles' men in a desperate attempt to save their comrades as well as their ships. After a certain period of time, they succeeded in saving the ships. They slaughtered every Trojan they could find afterwards.
Patroclos is nothing short of a gallant and fearless leader. If he had not possessed these traits, then perhaps he would not have given a thought as to what might be the conditions of the soldiers in that moment. After all, he was in their camp and far away from the battlefield itself. If he was not noble enough, then I bet he would not have desperately begged to borrow Achilles' armor. Even as he saw Apollo join the flanks of the Trokans, he did not retreat. Instead he continued his campaign despite of the growing risk of his death. As you may well know, at that time, mortals revered the Gods and respected their powers as Celestial beings. A fact that Patroclos did not anymore acknowledge while fighting along side his men. A proud leader tilts when he should withdraw. He does not give up even the slimmest of chances. He would gladly take that opportunity to take a shot at glory and immortality. He would show resiliency as a model to his men. These are the qualities that made me admire Patroclos.
